When grooming horses, choosing the right brush is of great importance. Plant-based bristles are very popular among horse lovers as they are more skin-friendly than synthetic bristles, due to the fact that they do not contain any irritants.

What are eco-friendly bristles made of?

Natural bristles are bristles that are derived from natural materials. These materials can come from animals such as pigs or horses, or from plants such as palm trees or agaves. The bristles are processed by hand or machine and can come in different lengths and thicknesses.

Are natural bristles vegan?

Natural bristles of animal origin are not vegan. However, Cappall only offers natural bristles made from purely plant-based materials. This means that all the brushes you find in our online shop are vegan.

Natural plant-based bristles at Cappall

To the two founders, horse owners themselves, it seemed macabre to groom their beloved horse with horsehair brushes. Most horsehair is obtained from the mane or tail. It is possible that horses were slaughtered to obtain the hair. How animal-friendly such bristles are obtained for brushes is very difficult for the end consumer to track. Although the use of horse hair in horse grooming has been common for a long time, the founding duo finds this ethically questionable.

For this reason, Cappall decided to use only high-quality plant-based bristles for their horse brushes. These bristles are not only vegan and thus animal-friendly, but also environmentally friendly and biodegradable, thus setting an example for animal welfare and environmental protection. Cappall currently offers three types of vegan bristles: Fibre, Union and Arega.

  • Fibre

Fibre is a natural bristle obtained from the agave plant. This plant is mainly cultivated in Mexico. This natural bristle is hard and resistant, but not as stiff as other bristles. Its colour is beige to yellowish. Fibre is ideal for general horse grooming. This type of bristle can be found, for example, in our 2-in-1 dandy brush for removing dirt such as dried sweat or in the horse grooming brush with slightly longer and therefore more flexible bristles.

  • Union

Union is a mixture of Fibre and Tampico. Tampico is a fibre obtained from the leaf rosette of the agave and originates from Mexico. Union bristles are slightly firmer than pure fibre bristles and have a grey-beige colour. Union is suitable for cleaning persistent soiling. This natural fibre is used in our 2-in-1 dandy brush, which is ideal for removing mud from legs and hooves.

  • Arega

Arega is a pure natural bristle obtained from the Palmyra palm tree. This palm species is native to India. Arega is very resistant and has a dark colour. Its firm hardness makes it ideal for cleaning heavy encrustations and is used in our hoof pick.
